Scout Support event

E-mail Print PDF

The club conducted a very successful support event on July 28 at Camp Snyder for a contingent of young men from the tri-state area.  Through a very generous annual contribution and mentorship of a business fraternity in Northern Virginia, over 65 kids from the region had an opportunity to spend a week at Camp Snyder conducting various outdoor activities.  We were fortunate to be asked again this year to support this group with aviation related presentations, discussions, and R/C demonstrations.  A team composed of Nic Burhans, Marsh Dehart, John Bisaga, Joe and Josh Franco, Rob Edmonds, Ron King, Duane Hlavinka, and myself conducted a very dynamic program for the kids.  Although warm, flying conditions were great for this team to demonstrate aircraft flight.  A few of the kids got to experience R/C flight via a buddy box with our club trainer.  Our thanks to this group for taking the time to come out and support these great kids.

Merit Badge #18

We completed another Aviation Merit Badge class yesterday at Camp Snyder.  This was number 18 in a series since 2003.  Thanks go out to Gary Robinson, Nic Burhans, Denny Smith, Dave Faint and Matt Brady for their superb support in making this a success for our Scouts.  We had nine Scouts participate in the event.  Of special note was Denny's, Gary's, and Nic's presentation of the aviation subject matter.  Their passion for the subject and smooth style made it a very effective event.

Crikey...she was a Grumpy Little Sheila!

I can't claim sole bragging rights! Crocadile Rob Edmunds came up with the stick and the bag that we got this into!

For those of you that didn't get the scoop. I drove down to the field to setup a trainer to fly. I backed in, got out and walked around to the back of the car and when I sat my field box down this "little ripper" was there striking at me! It wasn't about to run off and hide. Knowing that the scouts would be coming down Rob got a stick and a plastic grocery bag. He got the the little guy to wrap around the stick, put him in the bag and I relocated him over by the pond. This is a Copperhead! Now, he was only about 10 inches long and 1/4" diameter, but their venom is more concentrated at this age, though their fangs aren't very long. Of course, were there is one.....you know where this is going. You might be a little more careful next time you go looking for that aircraft down in the brush!

On 21 Feb 09, PCWRCF sponsored another successful MB clinic at Camp Snyder with 15 Scouts attending.  This was the 16th clinic sponsored by our club over the past 6 years. We achieved the high level of badge completions thanks to the consist support and dedication of our club counselors and members helping out at the events.  The next clinic is scheduled for 2 May 09.
