Current Field

The club currently operates one field on private property at the Camp William B. Snyder near Haymarket.

Future Fields

We are always in search mode for potential flying sites.  We continue to work with the Prince William County Park Authority on the Catharpin Park location.  Nothing is firm at this time.  If you see any opportunities as you travel about the county, please feel free to contact one of the board members.

A Good Board Meeting

Last board meeting was held at the field and in support of a scout activity. Lots of fun was had by all in one of the better "after work" sessions I've had in a while! While the amount of scout activity was a little short of expectations, there was no shortage of flying and enjoyment of a great afternoon and evening!

Can't even recall of any major incidents, only a broken stab-spar on Doug's Tango to remind all that contrary to popular belief, you can actually have too much control throw and power... Jason then promptly showed us that may not apply to heli's...

Another day at the field...

Last weekend (Memorial Weekend) was one of those great impromptu "lets go fly" weekends, where there was more people at the field than at a scheduled fun-fly or other organized event... It was beautiful weather and while a little heavy on the wind (especially as it was crosswind) it was still a great time to fly!

One of our newest members, Charles Harding, brought his "First Person View" or FPV setup, where a camera feeding live video to a pair of goggles real-time from the aircraft is all the visual that is used to fly! That was pretty incredible to see Charles under the hoodie, flying the plane as if he was on-board... With Marsh sitting stand-by on the main controls should anything go out of band...

It looked really cool as he was stalking another aircraft! Amazing formation/dogfight flying! Here is a link to a YouTube video of this flight!

Shed Flight

The shed has moved! As have some critters, but their choice was not driven by desire in the same way as the shed was moved for convenience and safety for our club members. It will be so good to have everything just by the side of the pits! Now, as for the guys that used to live in there, I think their term is up.

Per Hammarin, Gary Robinson, Denny Smith, Don Johnson, Dean Shires and Fred Gay (in order of appearance, while only the first three actually made the voyage across the field) helped getting the new location organized! We were all as pleased and surprised that the plywood skid/skis worked so good! Not a trace of trauma on the runway at all! There was a very short period of time when we contemplated taking the long way to the pits with the shed tagging along as a roller weight, but we got smart(er) quick...

Now we just need to get all that solar power gear going Marsh!

Field Access Update

E-mail Print PDF

Camp William B. Snyder flying field hours are 0800-1700 Mon-Sat and 0800-1400 on Sundays.  Please comply with our hosts request to be off the property by closing time.  The camp closes on all federal holidays.  If we are able to make other arrangements during these periods, an announcement will be provided on our web site.

Parking

Parking is available for a few vehicles next to the fence line by the pits.  Additional parking is available on the gravel area by the trailers just North of the field.  As previously requested, do not park by the pit fence line if the ground is wet.  This is to prevent generating ruts and damaging that area.  We will be restricted from using that parking area if we do not comply with our hosts request.
