Welcome to Prince William County R/C Flyers Club!

A Good Board Meeting

E-mail Print PDF

Last board meeting was held at the field and in support of a scout activity. Lots of fun was had by all in one of the better "after work" sessions I've had in a while! While the amount of scout activity was a little short of expectations, there was no shortage of flying and enjoyment of a great afternoon and evening!

Can't even recall of any major incidents, only a broken stab-spar on Doug's Tango to remind all that contrary to popular belief, you can actually have too much control throw and power... Jason then promptly showed us that may not apply to heli's...

The continuing saga of WAA-08

E-mail Print PDF

As many of you will recall, in May of 2008 I participated in what is best described as an epic RC event - Wings Across America 2008 (WAA-08). This is an effort, organized by Frank Giesler from Gloucester, VA, to fly a Steven's Aeromodel SQuiRT aircraft in all 48 contiguous United States. The original idea was to complete the endeavor in a year - that has now stretched over two+ years, but the philosophy behind the project remains the same and has been incredibly successful: promote the joy and camaraderie that IS RC flying! And we've picked up some volunteers to transport the SQuiRT to Alaska and Hawaii, making it Wings Across ALL of America! And the effort has had its share of publicity along the way, with newspaper articles, TV stories, and several RC magazine write-ups!

The SQuiRT is now in California - I've included a couple of pictures of its most recent fliers, along with my original pics that I submitted when I flew the SQuiRT in 2008 (I was pilot #8 - we're up to 382 registered pilots!). If you'd like to follow the progress of WAA-08, check out this RC Groups link.

Another day at the field...

Last weekend (Memorial Weekend) was one of those great impromptu "lets go fly" weekends, where there was more people at the field than at a scheduled fun-fly or other organized event... It was beautiful weather and while a little heavy on the wind (especially as it was crosswind) it was still a great time to fly!

One of our newest members, Charles Harding, brought his "First Person View" or FPV setup, where a camera feeding live video to a pair of goggles real-time from the aircraft is all the visual that is used to fly! That was pretty incredible to see Charles under the hoodie, flying the plane as if he was on-board... With Marsh sitting stand-by on the main controls should anything go out of band...

It looked really cool as he was stalking another aircraft! Amazing formation/dogfight flying! Here is a link to a YouTube video of this flight!
